First-of-its-kind development in the Southern Hemisphere

Tas City Building was engaged to deliver a groundbreaking industrial project for Petuna Australia at their Cressy hatchery facility. As a first-of-its-kind development in the Southern Hemisphere, the new hatchery was designed to integrate advanced sustainable technologies—including a state-of-the-art recirculation system that reduces water usage by over 95%, significantly lowering environmental impact.

challenges

This project involved several technical and logistical complexities. The construction needed to align with the biological growth cycle of fish, demanding a tightly controlled timeline. Additionally, stringent biosecurity measures were essential throughout the build to prevent contamination, posing a unique challenge for construction operations. The site also required high-performance infrastructure capable of supporting advanced plumbing and electrical systems, as well as pressure-tested tanks and water management features.

Solutions

Led by Project Manager Steven Simeoni and Site Manager Stuart Shaw, the Tas City Building team responded with a blend of innovation, precision, and collaboration:

  • Close coordination with the architect enabled design refinements that delivered cost efficiencies without compromising quality or schedule.
  • Alternative construction methods—including in situ concrete, precast elements, and structural steel—were strategically employed to meet technical requirements.
  • Specialised plumbing and electrical systems were integrated to support the facility’s complex recirculation and biofiltration technologies.
  • Strict technical compliance was achieved, with waterproofing, concrete curing, and tank pressure testing meeting all specifications.
  • Biosecurity and environmental controls were actively managed, with silt traps, PPE protocols, and hygiene controls in place throughout the build—guided by Petuna’s internal policies.

The successful delivery of this pioneering facility showcases Tas City Building’s capacity to deliver complex, sustainable, and biosecure infrastructure—setting a new benchmark in industrial construction.
